The standard is targeted primarily at types of employment where the risk of workers developing TB is significant. It specifically mentions 11 types of employers which include:

  • Hospitals
  • Prisons and Jails
  • Facilities using procedures that result in aerosolization of pulmonary secretions or providing radiographic or other types of diagnosis or treatment of TB or HIV infections.
  • Employers of emergency personnel
  • Employers other than hospitals that have employees who routinely work in hospitals.
  • Employers with workers who deliver non-emergency health care to patients in settings other than hospitals or clinics.
  • Residential facilities for individuals infected with HIV.
  • Long-term care facilities for the elderly.
  • Homeless shelters.
  • Facilities that provide drug or alcohol-abuse treatment or counseling.
  • Laboratories and other clinical research, or production facilities that work with TB bacteria.
